Jonathan Marchessault's agent Pat Brisson says there have been plenty of contract talks with the Vegas Golden Knights but it's unlikely that one gets signed before the end of the season according to kget.com.
Marchessault is in the midst of his best goal-scoring season of his career. He's already eclipsed his career high and still has 13 games remaining. With 38 goals and 60 points in 69 games, he's on pace to finish with 45 goals and 71 points.
It's no fluke that Marchessault is having a strong season. He was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for his performance in the playoffs last season. He tied for the lead in goals and finished one point back of his linemate Jack Eichel for the lead in points.
Marchessault is 33 years old and his age is likely the only reason a contract hasn't been agreed on. There are always risks when signing a player who's approaching his mid-thirties to anything that's for multiple years.
Marchessault understands this and wants to stay according to Brisson.
"He's OK waiting. Of course, you would rather have a deal done. Sometimes the reason you don't have a deal done is because you're not there yet. He's been in Vegas since its inception seven years ago. He likes it there, been producing, won the Cup last year, won the Conn Smythe."
Both Brisson and GM Kelly McCrimmon have decided to keep the specifics to themselves.
HC Bruce Cassidy spoke about why he thinks Marchessault has been so successful this season.
"He's not missing. He seems to get it off and it's on net. He's not whiffing on chances very often. He's putting himself in good spots consistently. I think from year to year, maybe the pick finds him more than other years. Goal scorers will probably tell you that."
The Canadian-born winger is the leader in many all-time categories for the Golden Knights. He was the first Golden Knights' player to reach 500 games, he's the franchise leader in goals (188), assists (220), and points (408).
If the Golden Knights do decide to not resign Marchessault, he'll be one of the top free agents this summer and will garner a lot of attention from many teams.
