Exactly one year ago today on June 13th, 2023, the Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Florida Panthers 9-3 in Game 5 to be awarded Stanley Cup Champions.
In front of a sold-out crowd at T-Mobile Arena, the Golden Knights played their most dominant game of the playoffs at the most important time.
After the heartbreaking loss to the Washington Capitals in their debut season in the NHL, the Golden Knights found themselves in the Western Conference finals multiple times but came up short each time. This year a determined and hungry team took care of the Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers and the Dallas Stars before defeating the Panthers.
In Game 5 against the Panthers, the Golden Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to goals from captain Mark Stone and Nicolas Hague. Despite the Panthers scoring first in the second period, the Golden Knights scored four unanswered goals to take a commanding 6-1 lead. With the Panthers desperate to find something to keep their Stanley Cup hopes alive they pulled their goalie while down 7-3 and Stone found the empty net to record a hat trick.
Jonathan Marchessault was awarded the Conn Smythe trophy after he recorded 13 goals and 25 points in 22 games.
Bill Foley envisioned a Stanley Cup within the first six years of the Golden Knights' existence and in their sixth year, the Vegas Golden Knights were crowned Stanley Cup Champions.
