Vegas Golden Knights prospect Mathieu Cataford has been traded from the Halifax Mooseheads to the Rimouski Oceanic in the QMJHL.
Cataford took home the QMJHL MVP award and was a finalist for the CHL Player of the Year award as well. He finished the season with 40 goals and 90 points in 65 games.
The Oceanic will be hosting the 2025 Memorial Cup guaranteeing them a spot in the tournament. They finished last season with a 37-26-5 record which was good enough for fifth in the Eastern Conference. They finished 13 points back of Cataford's former team.
This trade makes sense for the Golden Knights prospect as many of their top players are expected to make the jump into pro hockey, likely at the AHL level.
Guaranteed Memorial Cup games means Cataford won't play with the Henderson Silver Knights to end the season as he did this year. The 19-year-old played four games with the Golden Knights AHL affiliate registering two assists.
Rimouski has been home to many top NHL players including Sidney Crosby and Alexis Lafreniere. Cataford has the opportunity to learn under a great organization and possibly end his junior hockey career with the ultimate prize.
