Former Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Logan Thompson spoke to Vince Sapienza about requesting a trade and starting the next chapter of his life with the Washington Capitals.
The 27-year-old started his professional career with the Golden Knights playing in his first-ever NHL game during the 2020-21 season. Since then, he's played in 103 career games posting a 9.12SV% and a 2.67GAA which was good enough for a 56-31-11 record.
He was traded to the Capitals on day two of the 2024 NHL draft and was at the event signing autographs for fans as the trade was going through. The Golden Knights received third-round picks in 2024 and 2025. They used their third-round pick to select goaltender Pavel Moysevich.
In his interview with Sapienza, Thompson spoke about his relationship with GM Kelly McCrimmon and his desire to take on a bigger role.
"Me and Kelly (McCrimmon) have a great relationship," said Thompson. "He drafted me when I was 14 years old to the Brandon Wheat Kings. At the end of the year, I expressed that I wanted to stay and take on a larger role with the team. I thought that I proved I was healthy all year and that I can play more starting role minutes and take on more responsibility. I think in the playoffs I did a good job of showing that."
Even after trading Thompson, the Golden Knights still have Adin Hill under contract this season and head coach Bruce Cassidy has put more trust in Hill than Thompson not only during their run to the Stanley Cup but also in the series against the Stars.
"With Hill being here and the Stanley Cup champion goalie, Kelly made it clear that he's their guy and I understand that. I'm really happy for Hill, he came in last year and he got paid and he won the city a Stanley Cup. So that's kind of where talking with Kelly kind of led to my decision that maybe I needed a change of scenery."
Despite requesting the trade, the Calgary, Alberta native insists that there is no bad blood with McCrimmon or anyone in the Golden Knights organization.
