The Capitals captain averaged 17:27 minutes a game, as well as 4:29 minutes on the power play.

The Washington Capitals made some big moves this week, acquiring Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch as they bolster their offense. All the while, Alex Ovechkin is watching, as coach Spencer Carbery said on Thursday, and is also willing to take on a modified role to win.

Carbery joined Grant Paulsen on 106.7 The Fan on Thursday to discuss the Capitals' recent moves and Ovechkin, who is still deciding on his NHL future.

The bench boss said he spoke with Ovechkin on Thursday morning and said that he's been impressed with the moves so far, and also added that he would be willing to take on a modified role with reduced minutes if he does return.

"He genuinely wants to win so as we improve the forward group, if now all the sudden we've got two more 30-goal scorers and that means O plays a minute or two minutes less of 5-on-5 and we're a better team he's going to raise his arm and go 'Yes! I love this.' Because he wants to win," Carbery said on the show. "It's no different on the power play as well."

Ovechkin is coming off his 21st NHL season, where he appeared in all 82 games and led Washington with 32 goals and 64 points while averaging 17:27 minutes a night, including 4:29 minutes on the power play.

He's expected to have a decision on whether or not he'll return at some point in July, though he mentioned at the end of the season he is "pretty sure" he has not played his last NHL game.

The 40-year-old did also note that if he were to return, he wanted Washington to be a Stanley Cup contender, something that general manager Chris Patrick has actively been working on this week.

With the additions of Kyrou and Tuch, the Capitals added more to the right side, but need more support on the left wing, Ovechkin's primary position, so having him return adds more depth. And, if he's willing to play a different kind of role, it's all the better as Ryan Leonard could get a look on the left side and be a candidate for top-6 minutes.
