The Washington Capitals know there is no margin for error going into Saturday's game as they look to bust out of a six-game losing streak to keep their season alive, and they'll face another tough test against the top-ranked Boston Bruins on Saturday.
Here's everything to know before puck drop at TD Garden at 3:30 p.m. ET.
After a tough 4-2 loss for the Capitals in Florida, head coach Spencer Carbery shook up the lines once more in Boston to try to ignite a spark. He reunited Aliaksei Protas, Connor McMichael and Anthony Mantha while also rewarding Mike Sgarbossa and placing him with wingers Max Pacioretty and Tom Wilson.
The defense also got a different look as Washington aims to shut down David Pastrnak and the top-tier Bruins offense, which averages 3.45 goals per game (sixth most in the NHL).
Here are the projected combinations based on Friday's practice:
Alex Ovechkin-Dylan Strome-T.J. Oshie
Aliaksei Protas-Connor McMichael-Anthony Mantha
Max Pacioretty-Michael Sgarbossa-Tom Wilson
Beck Malenstyn-Nic Dowd-Nicolas Aube-Kubel
Martin Fehervary-John Carlson
Rasmus Sandin-Nick Jensen
Joel Edmundson-Ethan Bear
Charlie Lindgren will get the start, head coach Spencer Carbery told reporters in Boston. Darcy Kuemper is expected to start on Sunday against the Vancouver Canucks.
- Sonny Milano will miss his 24th consecutive contest as he continues to work his way back from an upper-body injury, though he is getting closer. The 26-year-old has not played in two months and was believed to be initially injured after taking a high hit from Jacob Trouba back on Dec. 9 against the New York Rangers.
- Evgeny Kuznetsov remains out indefinitely after entering the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.
- Nicklas Backstrom is still on long-term injured reserve and is unlikely to play again this season after stepping away due to his hip not responding as he'd hoped following hip resurfacing surgery in June 2022.
- Trevor van Riemsdyk (illness) remains out of the lineup.
- Alex Ovechkin has goals in three straight games and 13 points in his last 13 outings.
- Rasmus Sandin is on a three-game point streak and has found the scoresheet in four of his last six.
- Anthony Mantha, who scored on Thursday, leads the team with 15 even-strength goals and has scored he game-opening goal a team-leading 11 times this season.
The game will be nationally televised and live on ABC and can be streamed on ESPN+.
