Sergei Belski — USA TODAY Sports - Tom Wilson Offered In-Person Hearing For High Sticking Noah Gregor, Capitals Forward Faces Lengthy Suspension

The Washington Capitals could be without Tom Wilson for a bit, as he will face supplemental discipline for high sticking Noah Gregor in Wednesday's 7-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Wilson has been offered an in-person hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety for his actions, meaning he could be suspended for longer than five games.

The high stick came in the third period, as Wilson was battling with Gregor along the boards. After a preliminary hit, he took an extra swing with his stick, getting Gregor in the head. He received a double-minor on the play.

Wilson has not been suspended since 2021, but has a lengthy history, including a 20-game suspension in 2018, which does not help his case.

The hearing couldn't come at a worse time for D.C., who is already down two right wingers with T.J. Oshie and Aliaksei Protas nursing day-to-day injuries. Wilson has points in three straight games and has been playing an integral role in the Capitals' playoff push as the team remains one point out of a Wild Card spot and looks to keep its postseason hopes alive. There are 14 games left in the regular season.

If Wilson is suspended and Oshie and Protas are not back in the mix, Washington will have to make another recall and bring up an extra forward. The only positive that comes out of this for D.C. is that it could open the door for a young player like Ethen Frank to get the chance to make his NHL debut.
