The Winnipeg Jets have quietly climbed back into the playoff race and now sit just four points out of a postseason spot after a strong run over the past two months.
During their last 24 games, the Jets have posted a 13-6-5 record, a stretch that has significantly improved their place in the standings. That momentum has continued since the league resumed play after the Olympic break, with Winnipeg going 6-2-2 in their last 10 games.
Several players across the lineup have elevated their play during this stretch, but one of the most important and least talked about contributors has been backup goaltender Eric Comrie.
Since a start on New Year’s Day, the 29-year-old netminder has been outstanding. Comrie has won five consecutive starts while allowing just seven goals during that span, posting a .946 save percentage. However, with Comrie set to become a pending free agent this offseason, Winnipeg could soon face an interesting decision.
Do they bring back a steady and reliable backup who has proven he can deliver in spot starts, or do they open the door for one of their highly regarded goaltending prospects?
One player to watch is 22-year-old Thomas Milic. The young goaltender has put together a strong season with the Manitoba Moose, posting a 15-8-4 record along with a 2.40 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage in 28 starts. Milic also made his NHL debut this season, giving the organization a look at what he could bring at the next level.
Should the Jets re-sign Eric Comrie as the backup next season, or should the team give Thomas Milic a real opportunity behind Hellebuyck?
