Roope Hintz’s overtime heroics and a suffocating Dallas defense extended Winnipeg's losing streak, spoiling Gabe Vilardi’s first goal and a brilliant 35-save performance from Stuart Skinner.
On Thursday, the Winnipeg Jets dropped their fourth straight game, stymied by the Dallas Stars elite defense in a 3-2 overtime defeat. Dallas entered the night with one of the league's best starts on the backend, having allowed two or fewer goals in eight of its nine games.
It was a tough night for a Jets team hoping to get its offense going after scoring just six goals over its previous three games. Winnipeg managed two more, both in the second period. Gabe Vilardi finally netted his first goal of the season, and Kyle Connor scored minutes later to give the Jets a 2-1 lead.
Dallas tied the game in the third on a goal from Roope Hintz, who later added the overtime winner. Wyatt Johnston also had a multi-point night, scoring the opening goal and adding an assist.
Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger continued his Vezina bid with 17 saves on 19 shots for his fifth win of the season. At the other end, Stuart Skinner was busy, making 35 saves on 38 shots and giving Winnipeg every chance to win. It was another stellar outing from Skinner wasted against a Dallas defense that was tough to crack. He now sits at 3-1-3 with a 2.67 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage.
Beyond Connor and Vilardi, it was a quiet night for the Jets' top names. Mark Scheifele and Cole Perfetti did not find the scoresheet, and neither did youngsters Brayden Yager, who made his season debut, and Viggo Björck.
Winnipeg will look to rebound Sunday in the Heritage Classic, one of the sport's biggest stages. The Jets will hope it becomes a memorable night and a building block for the rest of the season.
