World Junior champion Alfons Freij joins the AHL Moose, bringing exciting North American professional debut action and a glimpse of future Jets defense.

One of the Winnipeg Jets’ most highly anticipated prospects, Alfons Freij, is set to make his North American professional debut after joining the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League to close out the season.

The 20-year-old defenseman, selected in the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft, recently wrapped up his campaign in Sweden and will now take the next step in his development with Winnipeg’s AHL affiliate.

Freij spent the season playing for Timrå IK in his home country, where he recorded six goals and five assists for 11 points along with a minus-six rating in 42 games. While his offensive numbers were modest at the club level, he showcased strong potential in key moments throughout the year.

He gained significant attention on the international stage this past January, helping Sweden men's national junior ice hockey team capture gold at the IIHF World Junior Championship, marking the country’s first title at the tournament since 2012.

Freij played an important role in Sweden’s success, logging major minutes on the power play and contributing offensively with seven assists in seven games, tying for the fifth-most points in the tournament.

His arrival in North America gives Jets fans an early look at one of the organization’s promising young defensemen. A strong showing with the Moose could position Freij to push for a roster spot with Winnipeg heading into next season.
