Despite a brutal nine-game skid, Winnipeg leans on organizational patience while eyeing internal roster moves to spark a playoff push and stabilize Scott Arniel’s bench in Manitoba.
Heading into Tuesday night's game against the Montreal Canadiens, the Winnipeg Jets were staring at a potential tenth straight loss, and talk around the hockey world had turned to what changes would be needed if the struggles continued.
Jets captain Adam Lowry told media after Sunday's 7-0 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes that "there's gonna be changes for sure." He pointed to players with the AHL's red-hot Manitoba Moose, who are among the league's best to start the season, as options who could be given a shot to bring the Jets some newfound life.
Other reports weighed in on what might come if the losses kept piling up. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman said on his 32 Thoughts podcast on Monday that he believes the Jets can still turn things around, and that Winnipeg is notably a patient organization when it comes to keeping coaches, citing Paul Maurice, Rick Bowness and now Scott Arniel. He added, however, that "I think everybody sees the writing on the wall if it doesn't change quick."
TSN's Darren Dreger added to the conversation earlier on Tuesday, before the game, on Insider Trading. He said he doesn't believe a coaching change is "on the radar just yet," and after Tuesday's thrilling win, it appears even more unlikely.
Winnipeg isn't out of the fight, either as they sit just four points out of a playoff spot, and over the nine-game skid they faced many of the league's toughest teams in what was one of the hardest stretches they will have to deal with all season. Now they have a chance to rebound and look forward, stacking wins to keep themselves in the playoff race.
