The Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament is officially underway, and as anticipation builds for Canada and the United States to hit the ice for their opening games Thursday, key roster decisions are beginning to come into focus.
For Team USA, one of the most common questions centered around the crease. Winnipeg Jets star Connor Hellebuyck had long been considered the frontrunner to start, particularly after serving as the Americans’ primary netminder at the 4 Nations Face-Off. However, Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman’s outstanding season prompted speculation that he could challenge for the top job.
According to multiple reports, including ESPN’s Emily Kaplan, Hellebuyck is expected to get the start for the United States in its tournament opener against Latvia. Kaplan also reported that forward Clayton Keller of Utah and defenseman Jackson LaCombe of Anaheim are projected to be healthy scratches for the matchup.
Hellebuyck’s international résumé this season supports the decision. At the 4 Nations Face-Off, the 32-year-old Michigan native posted a 2-1-0 record in three starts, along with a stellar 1.59 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage. His steady presence in net played a crucial role in anchoring the American squad during that tournament.
At the NHL level, Hellebuyck’s numbers have remained respectable despite Winnipeg’s team struggles. He currently holds a 13-16-7 record, paired with a 2.79 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage. Considering the Jets’ 22-26-8 record this season, his performance has been viewed by many as a stabilizing force behind a team battling inconsistency.
With the Americans set to face Latvia, the decision to go with Hellebuyck signals confidence in his experience and ability to handle the pressure of international competition. As Team USA begins its quest for tournament success, all eyes will be on its veteran netminder to set the tone early.
