Winnipeg Jets fans were left confused Thursday night ahead of the team’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning after a late lineup change contradicted comments made earlier in the day by head coach Scott Arniel.
Following the Jets’ morning skate, Arniel indicated the team would not be making significant changes to its lineup, largely due to injuries affecting the roster.
“We have too many on the IR do be able to do that,” Arniel said after the skate, suggesting the lineup would closely mirror what was seen during the morning session.
That projected lineup included defensemen Luke Schenn and Logan Stanley, both of whom have been the subject of trade speculation ahead of Friday's trade deadline. Arniel appeared confident the lineup would remain intact but changes were made last minute.
“What you’re seeing is what you’re getting tonight,” Arniel told reporters, though he did briefly acknowledge the possibility of change, adding the lineup “could change I suppose.”
By the time the Jets took the ice, however, both Schenn and Stanley were absent from the lineup. Instead, the club recalled defenseman Isaak Phillips from the Manitoba Moose and dressed Ville Heinola as the two extra defenders to draw in. The unexpected move quickly raised questions among fans and observers, particularly given Arniel’s earlier comments suggesting minimal changes were coming.
While the reasoning for the late adjustment was not immediately confirmed, the decision to hold both Schenn and Stanley out of the lineup could signal a precautionary move ahead of the trade deadline.
The Jets’ front office, led by general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff, has been active in trade discussions in the days leading up to the deadline. With both Schenn and Stanley frequently mentioned in trade rumors, Thursday’s decision may indicate the organization is working toward potential deals.
If that proves to be the case, the late scratches could be a strong indication that both defensemen may be on the move before Friday’s deadline passes.
