The Winnipeg Jets will have a captain for the 2023-24 season.
After going captain-less in 2022-23, the Winnipeg Jets unveiled Adam Lowry as the club's new captain on Tuesday morning.
“When I found out, I was pretty excited, almost a little speechless," Lowry said in a team-issued release. "It’s something growing up you kind of can dream about and something that seems almost unattainable."
“Getting to be a captain of a Canadian NHL team is pretty special and something I’m really looking forward too.”
Lowry, 30, is entering his 10th season in the league and will serve as the third captain of the franchise since its return to Winnipeg from Atlanta (Andrew Ladd, Blake Wheeler).
Having stripped Wheeler of the 'C' upon joining the Jets last season, head coach Rick Bowness rolled with three alternates in 2022-23, as Lowry, Josh Morrissey and Mark Scheifele each served in leadership roles with the club.
He confirmed the three would continue wearing letters for the team this year.
“It went well last year," Bowness said "Mark, Adam and Josh did a great job in the room which is what we wanted. We all know Adam is the first guy on the ice to stick up for his teammates."
Lowry had 13 goals, 36 points and 48 penalty minutes in a full 82 games for the Jets last year, before adding four goals, five points and two penalty minutes in five postseason games against Vegas.
“He’s a true professional, he has total respect from every player on the team, every player around the league and certainly from the coaching staff as well," Bowness continued. "We just feel at this point it’s the right time to name Adam as our captain.”
Although it will be his first time serving as a team captain since his final year with the Swift Current Broncos in 2012-13, Lowry won't need to look far for leadership examples.
“To kind of have my father having gone through that experience of having been a captain in a Canadian market and not necessarily be the superstar that’s leading the team," Lowry added. "It’s more of a third-and fourth-line guy and you can still find value, lead a team, you can still bring a team together."
