Jets forward Nino Niederreiter leads Switzerland, a significant honor amplifying his Olympic presence beyond the ice.

The 2026 Winter Olympics will officially get underway Friday afternoon in Milano-Cortina, and the Winnipeg Jets are set to have a strong presence on the world’s biggest winter sports stage, both on and off the ice.

Several Jets players have already been named to their respective national team rosters, including forwards Kyle Connor and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who will suit up for Team USA when men’s hockey begins later in the Games.

However, one Winnipeg player will take on an even more prominent role before competition begins.

It was announced Thursday that Jets forward Nino Niederreiter will serve as Switzerland’s flag-bearer for the opening ceremonies. Niederreiter, who will also represent his home country in the Olympic hockey tournament, will lead the Swiss delegation into the stadium as the Games officially begin.

The honor marks a significant milestone in Niederreiter’s international career and highlights his importance within Swiss hockey. Carrying the flag is considered one of the highest individual distinctions at the Olympic Games, symbolizing athletic achievement and national pride.

Niederreiter will be joined by several other NHL stars sharing that distinction in Milano-Cortina. Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnak has been selected as the flag-bearer for Czechia, while Edmonton Oilers star Leon Draisaitl will carry the flag for Germany during the opening ceremonies.

With multiple players competing for national teams and one literally leading his country onto the Olympic stage, Winnipeg's footprint at the 2026 Winter Olympics will be unmistakable as the Games begin.
