The Jets' dismal road record is costing them valuable points as they look to salvage their playoff aspirations in final eight games.

After a devastating but understandable loss to the Dallas Stars on Thursday, the Winnipeg Jets find themselves back in a familiar position, sitting three points behind the San Jose Sharks for the second wild card spot.

One of the biggest issues holding Winnipeg back this season has been its struggles away from home. The loss in Dallas dropped the Jets’ road record to 14-17-6, tying them with three other teams for the sixth-worst mark in the NHL.

With time running out, the Jets will need to turn things around quickly if they hope to make the postseason. Four of their final seven games will be played on the road, including a matchup Saturday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The team’s road difficulties mark a stark contrast from last season, when Winnipeg posted the third-best road record in the league at 26-15-0 and the drop-off reflects a broader regression, as the Jets have looked noticeably different from the team that found success a year ago.

With the playoff race tightening, Winnipeg’s ability to improve away from home could ultimately determine whether its season extends beyond the regular schedule.
