The Winnipeg Jets made a splash near the trade deadline, sending defensemen Luke Schenn and Logan Stanley to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a package that included a conditional second- and fourth-round draft pick, defenseman Jacob Bryson, and former first-round pick Isak Rosen.
The Jets wasted little time integrating their new additions. Bryson slotted in as a bottom-pairing defenseman, while Rosen was experimented with in multiple roles alongside veteran forwards Jonathan Toews and Gustav Nyquist. Both have been used conservatively, but Thursday night against the New York Rangers, the duo made an immediate impact.
Early in the second period, Bryson fired a shot from the point that Rosen redirected into the net for a game-tying goal. The goal marked a rare moment where both players acquired in the same trade directly contributed to a scoring play, showing the Jets’ return on their deadline investment even in limited minutes.
Despite the goal, the Rangers ultimately prevailed, handing Winnipeg a frustrating loss in a critical stretch of the season. The defeat had playoff implications, as the Jets were chasing the second wild card spot. With the San Jose Sharks securing only one point in their own game, Winnipeg could have closed the gap from five to four points with a win.
The Jets now face a tighter playoff race and must look back at Thursday’s matchup as a missed opportunity. While the trade acquisitions have shown promise, the team will need to convert those moments into victories down the stretch to stay in contention.
