By unifying decades of fractured statistics, the NHL has paved the way for Mark Scheifele to eclipse legendary marks held by icons Dale Hawerchuk and Thomas Steen.
On Thursday, the NHL announced they will be cleaning up the record books for the Winnipeg Jets franchise, untangling decades of fractured history and formally reattaching the full lineage to the current club.
The change reshuffles the Jets' record books in a meaningful way, and no player stands to benefit more immediately than Mark Scheifele. Heading into the 2026-27 season, Scheifele now sits just eight goals shy of passing Dale Hawerchuk's 379 for the franchise lead. He's also 19 assists away from overtaking Thomas Steen's mark of 553, and 23 points away from surpassing Hawerchuk's 929 for the franchise scoring record.
When talking asked about what it means to him to be now pursuing a legend in Dale Hawerchuk, Scheifele explained "I'm chasing a different guy. A guy that meant a lot to me and this community."
All three marks look well within reach for Scheifele, with each potentially falling within the first month or two of the regular season. The reunification of the franchise's history gives the longtime Jets center a genuine shot at climbing to the top of the mountain across the board, cementing his name atop a franchise record book that now spans more than four decades and three distinct chapters of the organization's history.
