Once-hyped Russian winger stalls in AHL, struggling to replicate rookie magic. Can he recapture offensive spark and reclaim his prospect status?

One of the most intriguing prospects to enter the Winnipeg Jets system in recent years, Nikita Chibrikov’s development path has taken an unexpected turn this season.

Selected in the second-round of the 2021 NHL Draft, Chibrikov quickly built a reputation as a dynamic offensive talent with high-end skill and creativity. The Russian winger turned heads during his first professional campaign in North America with the Manitoba Moose in 2023-24.

As a rookie at the AHL level, he produced an impressive 47 points in 70 games, a total that not only led all Moose rookies but also earned him a late-season call-up to Winnipeg.

In his NHL debut with the Jets, Chibrikov found the back of the net, instantly adding to the excitement surrounding his future. The strong finish reinforced the belief that Winnipeg had uncovered a potential difference-maker.

His second season showed continued promise, though at a more measured pace. Chibrikov recorded 18 points in 30 games with Manitoba and contributed two goals and an assist in four appearances with Winnipeg. The flashes of offensive instinct and confidence with the puck suggested he was inching closer to a full-time NHL role.

Heading into this season, there was legitimate buzz that Chibrikov could push for a permanent roster spot. Instead, the campaign has proven to be a challenging one. He appeared in eight games with the Jets but was held pointless.

His struggles have extended to the AHL, where he has managed just five points in 32 games. Injuries have sidelined him at times, disrupting any chance at sustained momentum. As it stands, he is projected to finish the season with just nine points, a steep decline from his rookie output.

The downturn has raised concerns within the organization and among the fan base. At 23 years old, Chibrikov remains young by NHL standards, but the window for prospects to establish themselves can close quickly. Development is rarely linear, and setbacks are part of the process, yet the contrast between his early promise and current production is difficult to ignore.

Still, the skill set that made him a second-round selection has not disappeared. If Chibrikov can regain his confidence, stay healthy, and rediscover the offensive rhythm that once made him one of the Jets’ most exciting prospects, there remains a path toward becoming an impact player at the NHL level.

For now, the upcoming offseason looms large. It may represent a pivotal chapter in determining whether Nikita Chibrikov’s early flashes were a preview of things to come, or simply an early peak for a player still searching for his footing.
