Manitoba tied a 36-year league record by netting four shorthanded goals against Rockford, providing a silver lining for the organization as its top prospects dominate the AHL.
On Friday night, the Winnipeg Jets were handed their eighth straight loss, but elsewhere in the organization it was a historic night.
In the AHL, the Manitoba Moose scored a stunning four shorthanded goals in a 6-3 road win over the Rockford IceHogs, tying an AHL record for the most shorthanded goals by a team in a single game since 1988.
It started in the first period, when former NHLer Noah Gregor scored the Moose's second goal of the game while Manitoba was on the penalty kill, with Danny Zhilkin picking up the assist. Later, with the game tied, highly touted prospect Brayden Yager did it all by himself, scoring an unassisted shorthanded goal that gave the Moose a 3-2 lead.
Rockford tied the game once again, but Manitoba closed things out with three unanswered goals in the third period. That included the Moose's third shorthanded goal of the game, an unassisted marker by defenseman Isaak Phillips, before Zhilkin found the scoresheet again with a shorthanded empty-net goal for the fourth.
It was a sensational effort by the Moose, who improved to 8-4-0-0 on the season, the best mark in the Western Conference. While the Jets struggle to find their footing, the other major Manitoba hockey club has been better than ever to start its season.
