Winnipeg eyes home-grown blueline phenom Carson Carels, a potential franchise cornerstone to energize their rebuild.

The Winnipeg Jets are preparing for a critical draft as they look to rebound following a disappointing season after capturing last year’s President’s Trophy.

The team faces several roster challenges and will need to secure a key centerpiece for their prospect pipeline, particularly as the primes of veterans like Mark Scheifele, Connor Hellebuyck, and Kyle Connor approach their later years.

One name that has generated significant buzz is Carson Carels, a 17-year-old defenseman from Cypress River, Manitoba. Carels, born in 2008, made headlines representing Team Canada at this past January’s World Junior Championships, recording an assist in five games en route to a bronze medal.

Now in his second full season with the Prince George Cougars, Carels serves as assistant captain and has been an offensive force from the blueline, tallying 20 goals and 53 assists for 73 points with a plus-23 rating in 58 games.

Although the Jets’ exact draft position is not yet determined, simulations suggest they could select seventh or eighth overall. Carels is widely regarded as a top-seven prospect, with some scouts including TSN’s Craig Button and EliteProspects.com ranking him as high as the top five. If he is available, the fit would be ideal, allowing the Jets to add a high-end defenseman from Manitoba while bolstering their future lineup.
