Through the first five games of the opening round series against the St. Louis Blues, Cole Perfetti could not buy a goal, robbed by Jordan Binnington on multiple occasions, but as things tend to balance out, the Winnipeg Jets forward was finally rewarded for his hard work.
The first five games of the series saw Perfetti throw 10 shots on goal, failing to convert any of those shots. Several of those chances would be considered high-danger or Grade A chances that Perfetti was shocked to be stopped on.
Regression is widespread in sports, hockey especially, and Perfetti got his dose of regression in Game 6 when he finally scored his first goal of the playoffs. The goal proved to be of no significance as the Jets were steamrolled in the second period, but it tied the game at the time.
In Game 7, with the Jets looking for any spark, it was their 23-year-old forward who stepped up. He deflected a Kyle Connor shot-pass perfectly into the top corner, cutting the lead to one goal. The Blues responded, and with the goaltender pulled, Vladislav Namestnikov brought them back within a goal.
Perfetti's heroics continued, scoring the tying goal with 2.2 seconds left in the game on another high-slot deflection.
"It's pretty cool. It's kind of what you dream of," Perfetti said post-game. "Playing in a Game 7. First time ever doing that, it was awesome playing in front of this crowd. It was incredible tonight... Again, no quit. Guys were exhausted but fought until the last second, and we got it done."
Perfetti enjoyed another positive season, setting a new career-high of 50 points and coming up one goal short of his career-high he set last season. His power play points, physicality and defensive attention improved, and it's why HC Scott Arniel felt comfortable playing him 15:11 of ice time a night.
Now in the playoffs, Perfett'is averaged 17:50 of ice time, has thrown 13 hits, blocked five shots and taken 18 shots on goal to help boost his impressive three goals and five points.
With each passing game, the Whitby, ON native has improved, growing in confidence and impacting the game in all three zones. His creativity with the puck is more evident, and it's no surprise that his shooting luck finally got up to his performances.
