The former Boston College captain brings his two-way prowess to a stout Manitoba blue line, looking to transition his steady collegiate play into a professional breakout season.
A college hockey captain nobody quite expected is set to join the Winnipeg Jets' AHL affiliate this upcoming season.
The fresh face out of the NCAA is preparing to make his mark on the Manitoba Moose after spending last season as captain of one of college hockey's powerhouse programs. Lukas Gustafsson, a 23-year-old puck-moving defenseman, put together steady two-way numbers across a four-year career at Boston College.
Over that span, Gustafsson was a regular contributor on one of the top teams in college hockey, posting 72 points and a plus-35 rating in 147 games while also showing strong instincts on the defensive side of the puck. He capped his career by captaining the Eagles and was named to the 2026 Hockey East Third All-Star Team.
Gustafsson joins a Manitoba defense that just finished ninth-best in the AHL in goals against, and the Moose will look to fold him in as a key piece to keep that success going on the back end. He'll have plenty of help along the way, with the chance to learn from established defenders who have anchored Manitoba's blue line, including Isaak Phillips and Ashton Sautner.
Signed as an undrafted free agent, Gustafsson won't carry heavy expectations into training camp. He already got a small taste of pro hockey late last season, picking up his first professional point on an assist in his second game with the Moose.
After standing out on one of the best teams in the NCAA, he'll be looking to do the same on one of the best defensive units in the AHL, and quietly exceed whatever expectations come his way.
