Fresh off Olympic gold and a career-worst season, the veteran netminder’s ultimatum has Winnipeg reeling. With Stuart Skinner waiting, a blockbuster deal looms if the Jets stumble.
During his end-of-season media availability, Hellebuyck made clear that after winning gold with Team USA at this past February's Winter Olympics, a Stanley Cup is next on his mind, and that he'll be pushing the organization to help him get there, or looking to do so elsewhere.
That stance set off an entire offseason of chaos that nearly saw the three-time Vezina Trophy winner dealt to the Buffalo Sabres around the time of the draft. Talks between the two sides grew serious, with Buffalo reportedly offering pieces that included the fourth overall pick, a roster player and additional assets, but Winnipeg wouldn't budge off its asking price and the deal ultimately fell through.
Now, with training camp just weeks away, fans are left wondering whether the dust has actually settled or whether Hellebuyck will still be moved at some point, especially if the Jets look anything like they did last season, when they missed the playoffs entirely.
The 33-year-old Michigan native is coming off a season that fell well short of the standard he set during his back-to-back Vezina-winning campaigns. He finished 2025-26 with a 23-23-11 record, a 2.86 goals-against average and a .895 save percentage, a career-worst mark, all while trade speculation followed him for much of the summer.
It's a steep drop from the level Hellebuyck sustained during his two-year run atop the league. Across those back-to-back Vezina seasons, he went a combined 84-31-7, posted a 2.19 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage, and led all goaltenders in wins by a wide margin.
The Jets have already taken steps to insure themselves against life without Hellebuyck as the rumors persist, acquiring former Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner. The 27-year-old Edmonton native projects as a capable backup behind Hellebuyck for now, but he'd be ready to step into a starting role if Winnipeg ultimately moves its longtime top netminder.
Despite the down year, evaluators remain reluctant to write off Hellebuyck given his track record. But if the season plays out as another rollercoaster for Winnipeg, there's a real chance the trade saga fires back up, with the future Hall of Famer potentially heading elsewhere if the Jets can't find their way back into playoff contention.
