Flint Firebirds Goalie Mason Vaccari Voted OHL Goaltender Of The Week

How have the Flint Firebirds taken off this year in the OHL? This is the team that finished sixth in the Western Conference last season with a record of 29-34-5. Today, the Firebirds currently sit on top of the West with 48 points (22-7-4).

Flint’s top line, consisting of Nathan Aspinall, Jimmy Lombardi, and Alex Kostov, has been incredible this year. Aspinall leads the OHL in points, while all three of them are inside the top ten in the OHL for goals.

But what has gone under the radar in Flint this year is the stellar play in between the pipes from their overage netminder, Mason Vaccari, who they traded for from Kingston during the summer.

Vaccari helped lead the Firebirds to a 2-0-1 week, winning both of his two starts, and being named the OHL’s Goaltender of the Week (GOTW).

Flint dismantled the Guelph Storm last Wednesday with a 9-1 victory. Vaccari stopped 26 of 27 shots he faced. His next start was more challenging, taking on the Kitchener Rangers at home. This is where Vaccari really earned his GOTW honors. The Mississauga, Ontario, native made 32 saves on 33 shots, fending off the Rangers’ push in the third period, but sealing the door to a 4-1 victory for Flint.

Vaccari improves to 18-4-2 on the season, sporting a 2.55 goals-against-average and a .918 save percentage. He’s recorded a .900 or above save percentage in his last six starts and has only recorded a save percentage lower than .900 in seven of his 24 games this season.

Flint brought Vaccari in to be their number one, and he’s lived up to the task. He ranks fourth in minutes played, sixth in shots against, fifth in saves, and first in wins amongst OHL goaltenders.

Vaccari takes home GOTW honors for the second time this season, winning the award back in week four of the season.
