Last Saturday, on Jan. 3, Erie Otters defenseman Garrett Frazer stepped up in the offensive zone and laid a vicious hit on Windsor Spitfires forward Cole Davis. It sparked a loud cheer from the home crowd and anger from the Spitfires.

Frazer did receive a two-minute minor penalty for checking to the head on the play, but also had to answer the bell.

Windsor defenseman Conor Walton immediately stepped in, grabbing Frazer and dropping the gloves. It wasn’t much of a tilt, but Walton received a two-minute minor for instigating and a ten-minute misconduct, quite standard to what we see in hockey nowadays when a player steps up for his teammate.

With Walton receiving a fighting major on the play, it marked the fourth time this season the 6-foot-5 defenseman has dropped the gloves, prompting an immediate two-game suspension by the league per their policy.

For those wondering what the rule is: A player in the OHL can fight three times before being suspended. Each fight exceeding that threshold is an automatic two-game suspension for that player.

Note: If a player is instigated upon, the fighting major is not included in the player’s total number of fights.

The extra game Walton received is because he also exceeded the instigator threshold, as he had instigated three out of four of his fights.

Walton will miss Windsor’s three games this week against Erie, Saginaw, and Brantford. He’s eligible to return for their game on Jan. 16 against the Otters, but won’t be facing off against Frazer, as he was traded to the Peterborough Petes
