Former Oshawa Generals star forward Calum Ritchie has had a crazy week. He was expected to make his New York Islanders debut on Thursday against the Carolina Hurricanes, but due to flight delays, his debut had to be postponed.

Alas, Ritchie got his moment Friday night, as he suited up for New York as they strolled into Washington, and handed the home team a 3-1 loss.

Ritchie played on the top line for the Islanders alongside Mathew Barzal and Kyle Palmieri. Although he was held without a point, he did log 16:17 of ice time. Islanders Head Coach Patrick Roy made sure to give their star prospect a fair shot, even if he did take two minor penalties within just over three minutes of each other in the second period.

The Oshawa Generals went to back-to-back OHL Finals in 2024 and 2025. Ritchie played a significant role in their playoff dominance over the past two seasons, acting as the team’s number-one centerman.

Ritchie was the second overall pick by the Gens in the 2021 OHL draft. He spent four years in Oshawa, recording 254 points (86 goals, 168 assists) in 221 regular season games. During the last two playoff seasons, he was their primary offensive threat alongside Beckett Sennecke, registering 55 points (17 goals, 38 assists) in 42 games.

Originally drafted in the first round of the 2023 NHL Draft by the Colorado Avalanche, he was traded to the New York Islanders last year as part of the haul that sent longtime Islanders forward Brock Nelson to Denver.

Having been traded for a top-six forward, the expectations in Long Island for the former OHL star are great, but he has always delivered throughout his hockey career.
