The RedHawks get a commitment from promising 2028 NHL draft eligible OHLer Tyler Cooper
Erie Otters forward Tyler Cooper has announced his commitment to play NCAA hockey at Miami University in Ohio, he announced on Instagram.
Cooper, 16, was drafted by Erie in the second round of the 2025 OHL Priority Selection, 34th overall.
As a rookie, Cooper had 11 goals, 12 assists, & 23 points in 63 games played while being one of the league's youngest players as a Dec. 16, 2009 birth date, making Cooper eligible for the 2028 NHL Entry Draft.
Cooper will not be able to join Miami until the 2027-28 NCAA season at the earliest, but may wait until after his draft year for the 2028-29 season.
Miami has not shied away from bringing in young players early, with Ilia Morozov having played his full freshman campaign this past season, becoming a first round pick as a reward for a strong year, 20th overall to the Buffalo Sabres.
The Illinois native Cooper played his youth hockey in Chicago, scoring 61 goals and 124 points in 71 games in his draft year with the Chicago Reapers, 50 points ahead in the team points scoring lead.
Cooper has an outside shot to win a spot in the Otters top-six for next season, although the signing of import Luka Arkko pushes Cooper down the depth chart, where he may find himself on the Erie third line at left wing, with a chance to move up the lineup if he can build on his offensive success from last season.
