The big splash yesterday was the Brampton Steelheads acquiring 52-goal scorer Carson Rehkopf from the Kitchener Rangers.

But buried behind that news was another OHL trade involving the Kingston Frontenacs and Owen Sound Attack.

The Attack dealt their former 10th overall pick in 2020, Cedrick Guindon, to the Kingston Frontenacs in exchange for a second, third, fourth, fifth, and tenth-round pick. The Frontenacs also received a tenth-round pick in 2028 along with the 2004-born forward.

Guindon, 20, is heading into his overage year and the 2004 group in Owen Sound was a logjam. Someone had to be moved due to the overage rule. And more decisions still need to be made.

Landon Hookey, Servac Petrovsky, Jackson Stewart, Madden Steen, Konnor Smith, Taos Jordan, and goaltender Corbin Votary are the number of overage players Owen Sound has at the moment who were on the team last year.

Clearly, Owen Sound’s management team recognized that the largest return they could get for one of their overagers was the former Montreal Canadiens prospect.

Cedrick was drafted in the fourth round, 127th overall by the Habs in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. Montreal elected not to sign him and no longer hold his rights. The Rockland, Ontario native is free to sign wherever he wants.

Guindon has an iron man streak ongoing. He has suited up in every single game for Owen Sound over the last three years.

He’s been close to a point-per-game player throughout his OHL career, recording 78 goals and 185 points in 204 regular season games. Cedrick had a down year last year, which saw his production drop from 69 points to 57.

The Frontenacs are losing top-six center Paul Ludwinski as he starts his professional career with the Chicago Blackhawks farm team Rockford IceHogs in 2024-25.

Kingston GM Kory Cooper identified the gaping hole in his lineup up front in his top-six with the loss of Ludwinski and went out and acquired a replacement for him in Guindon.

After not receiving an entry-level contract from the Canadiens, Cedrick has some added motivation next season to prove to NHL and AHL teams that he deserves a professional contract.

Kingston has acquired a top-six center and Memorial Cup-winning netminder Nolan Lalonde this summer. The team is on a mission to improve from their 70-point season and first-round playoff exit last year.
