The Petes have acquired Koprwoski from Owen Sound in exchange for a draft pick.

The Peterborough Petes have appeared to find at least a short-term fix to their sudden goaltending issues.

As starter Owen Nelson suddenly departed the team to head to the NCAA on Tuesday, the Petes needed another goalie all of a sudden.

They've plugged that hole via trade, acquiring Matthew Koprowski from the Owen Sound Attack in exchange for a conditional 15th round pick in the 2028 OHL draft. The condition on that pick is if Koprowski remains on Peterborough's roster beyong Jan. 10, 2027, it will become an 11th round pick.

Koprowski, 19, was a fourth-round pick by the Attack in the 2023 OHL draft. He's played parts of three seasons in Owen Sound, recording an 8-13-5 record with a .872 save percentage and 4.26 goals against average in 29 games last year.

With Ryerson Leenders starting and Maksim Corovic as the backup this season, there was no space for the 6-foot-3 Koprowski with the Attack, making him a prime trade candidate for a team in need of an emergency goalie.

In Peterborough, a good suitor was found, as they add the Komoka native to their roster, and look to give him at least a bit of a shot in the coming months.

"Matthew is a big goaltender with OHL experience," Petes GM Michael Oke said in a press release. "He's a good addition to our goaltending depth moving forward."

Masen Johnston will likely take over the starting job for the Petes for the time being, though he has struggled in limited minutes to start this season.

Peterborough as a whole has had problems keeping the puck out of their own end, with 23 goals and 163 shots against in five games. While Koprowski won't be a magic fix to any of their issues, he'll at least fill in as a stopgap for the near future.
