Ryan Roobroeck scored his 21st goal of his rookie season on Friday night, as the Niagara IceDogs beat Oshawa 4-3 in overtime.
Roobroeck tied the IceDogs' rookie goal-scoring record with this goal, tying Akil Thomas & Kevin He — pretty good company.
"It's special. I couldn't have done it without my teammates," said Roobroeck on the historic feat.
While the IceDogs were playing the Generals, there was a little game-within-the-game as Ryan was playing against his brother Dylan Roobroeck. Dylan is a nineteen-year-old New York Rangers draft pick.
The two brothers have visible similarities on the ice. Their strides are identical, they both have long reaches, and they both have the tall size.
"You grow up together, playing each other, always battling each other in mini sticks," said Ryan. "Getting to score against him tonight meant a lot to me and my family."
Ryan Roobroeck sits fourth in OHL rookie scoring with 21 goals and 37 points. He ranks 2nd among 2007-born players.
Roobroeck's shot has always been the focal point in his game. When he's got the puck and open ice in the offensive zone, nine times out of ten it's going in the back of the net.
His release is lethal, and even his teammate Kevin He agrees. "He has a sick shot," says He.
Kevin He also added, "he's a smart guy, he's a high IQ player, and he can definitely put the puck in the net."
Roobroeck and the IceDogs have 15 games left on the regular season schedule, as he will look to break that record and beyond.
