Sudbury Wolves release statement regarding the trade request of their star player
The Sudbury Wolves released a statement regarding their all-star forward Quentin Musty.
"Quentin Musty is an elite, highly skilled player and an NHL first-round pick to the San Jose Sharks. Last season, Quentin led the OHL in points per game, and had he played all 68 games, he would have been the league’s top scorer. It is unfortunate that he has taken this position, as the areas of his game needing further development to become an NHL player are the exact areas our new coaching staff has been focused on throughout the summer."
Those were some of the words included in the organization's statement.
The drama started when former Sportsnet employee Jeff Marek reported Monday afternoon that Musty has requested a trade and has been at home in Hamburg, New York since last Tuesday.
"Our priority remains building and developing a strong and competitive team. If a deal arises that significantly improves our team, we will consider it. Until then, Quentin remains an important part of the Sudbury Wolves, and he is welcome to join the team at any time," further stated in their statement.
The Wolves organization has stated that they are committed to building a competitive team. However, the team has suffered significant losses with Dalibor Dvorsky and David Goyette graduating to the professional ranks, and the trades of Nolan Collins, Evan Konyen, and Matthew Mania.
Sudbury may try to be competitive this season, but it seems like they haven't put together a roster that would make them contenders. Musty probably wants a chance to compete for an OHL Championship in what is likely to be his final OHL season.
Musty was drafted first overall by the Wolves in the 2021 OHL Priority Selection. He was one of five players to eclipse the century mark last season with 102 points and finished fifth in goals with 43 in 53 games.
Where may the highly skilled winger land?
The Oshawa Generals splashed and traded for Winnipeg Jets first-rounder Colby Barlow last Thursday, and the Brampton Steelheads fished Seattle Kraken prospect Carson Rehkopf from the Kitchener Rangers in the summer.
Both teams are expected to contend for first place in the Eastern Conference and making another splash acquiring a first-line forward probably won't happen.
But what about the Brantford Bulldogs?
Brantford has had a disappointing start to the season. They are 1-3 and have scored only 10 goals in four games, the second-fewest in the league to date. 2024 Rookie of the Year Jake O'Brien hasn't gotten off to a hot start either and could benefit from having a lethal goal-scorer like Musty put on his wing.
Or, could the reigning Memorial Cup Champions Saginaw Spirit look to add another elite offensive threat alongside top 2025 NHL Draft prospect Michael Misa?
The Spirit made several moves to bolster their team last season and may not have the assets Brantford does to acquire Musty.
