Spencer's departure gets Niagara down to three overagers.

The Sarnia Sting have acquired overage defenceman Liam Spencer from the Niagara IceDogs in exchange for Erie's 2027 sixth-round pick, the teams announced Thursday.

Spencer, 20, will now join his third OHL team after being drafted by the London Knights before being dealt to Niagara last summer.

The London native has appeared in three games this season with the IceDogs, going pointless. Niagara has been in an overage jam, with four 2006-born players filling the maximum of three spots allowed. This trade frees that jam, and gives Sarnia just their second overage player, alongside Jack Van Volsen.

The 6-foot-4 rearguard will provide experience, size and winning pedigree to a Sting side still looking to find consistency in the young OHL season. They're coming off a statement win to kick off OHL rivalry week against the Knights last night, but are also reeling from a disappointing weekend where they lost handily to Saginaw, twice.

“Liam’s size and experience is exactly what we have been looking for," Sting GM Dylan Seca said in a press release. "He is very knowledgeable in his role, and I have a lot of appreciation for the elements of his game."

The Sting say Spencer will be available as soon as Friday's rematch against London as rivalry week continues.
