Owen Sound Attack earlier this week announced the hiring of their new Head Coach. GM Dale DeGray welcomed former Owen Sound Plater Scott Wray as the teams 17th Head Coach in franchise history.
Wray has spent the last seven seasons behind the bench of the North Bay Battalion as an Assistant Coach. Before joining the Battalion, he coached the Powassan Voodoos to a NOJHL championship in 2016-17.
“After going to the conference finals the last three seasons and being a major part of that coaching staff, I feel it’s only fitting he gets an opportunity to run his own bench and be a Head Coach in the OHL,” said Attack GM Dale DeGray.
Last month, The Attack organization announced that the team and Interim Head Coach Darren Rumble parted ways, beginning their search for a new Head Coach for the 2024-25 season. DeGray said that they had over 45 candidates apply for their open position.
“Throughout the entire process, I kept coming back to one interview and resume, and that was Scott Wray,” said DeGray. “He checked a lot of boxes. His expectation of the team, how we need to play and his communication were paramount in this decision. Knowing that he is familiar with the city having played in Owen Sound, didn’t hurt either.”
Wray was drafted 55th overall in the fourth round by the Owen Sound Platers in the 1996 OHL Priority Selection. His time in Owen Sound was short-lived, only playing in 21 games before being traded to the North Bay Centennials during his rookie season. The Ottawa, Ontario native went on to play 179 games in the OHL where he tallied up 41 goals and 95 points.
His son Masen Wray was a third-round, 49th-overall pick by the Hamilton Bulldogs in the 2022 OHL Priority Selection. Earlier this year, he was traded to the Niagara IceDogs in a three-player deal.
“I’m really excited, it’s a privilege to be here. It’s such an exciting moment for my family and I. It’s really come full circle for me, I started my junior career here,” said Wray.
Owen Sound has a huge off-season on their hands seeing as their three most productive players from this past season just played their overage season — Deni Goure, Ethan Burroughs, and Sam Sedley.
Is a rebuild on the horizon for the Attack organization? Or will they decide to build around one of the best goaltenders in the OHL, Carter George, and Winnipeg Jets first-rounder, Colby Barlow? That’s assuming Barlow doesn’t make the Jets roster out of training camp.
