Former 2022 seventh-round draft pick by Florida signs his first pro contract
Liam Arnsby will be taking his physical presence to the pro level after signing his first pro contract with the Charlotte Checkers on Tuesday.
The North Bay Battalion captain was originally drafted by the Florida Panthers in the seventh round, 214th overall in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.
After failing to receive an entry-level contract from the recent Stanley Cup Champions, he remains in the organization as a member of their AHL affiliate, Charlotte, on a two-year AHL contract.
Arnsby, 20, is not a forward who demonstrates his value by simply racking up points. Throughout his time in the OHL (2019-2024), he was known as one of the most aggressive hitters. He didn't just aim to make contact with his opponent, he hit to cause damage. He is like a heat-seeking missile, making defenders fearful when he is the first man in on the forecheck.
Liam is also a defensively sound centerman who hustles hard on the backcheck and supports his defensemen low to break up the cycle or be a quick short-range passing option on the breakouts.
Over the last three seasons, Arnsby has worn the “C” for North Bay. Ever since playing with Shane Wright, Brennan Othmann, and Brandt Clarke in their U16 season for the Don Mills Flyers, he has always exemplified what it meant to be a leader through his play on the ice.
Throughout his 215 OHL games, he accumulated 110 points and 304 penalty minutes. He’s been to three consecutive Eastern Conference Finals with the Battalion, recording 20 points in 43 games.
Arnsby’s lackluster offensive skillset and ability to be an offensive play-driver would be a few reasons why he was most likely not given an NHL contract by Florida.
However, a player who works his tail off as much as he does should not be counted out. When you think of the intangibles a player needs to have to play professionally, Arnsby has those.
He never quits, gives 110% effort in everything he does, is always there for his teammates, and has the physical sense to be a punishing player to play against on any given night.
