The University of Michigan has received a massive commitment from one of the most intriguing 2009-born defense prospects in the world.
On Saturday, 6-foot-7 Saginaw Spirit defenseman Drew Roscoe announced his commitment to play D1 hockey in the NCAA for the University of Michigan via his Instagram account. According to EliteProspects.com, his commitment initiates in the 2027-28 season.
The St. Louis, Missouri native was taken in the second round (40th overall) by Saginaw in the 2025 OHL Priority Selection. He was the 11th defenseman taken in the draft and the second American.
Roscoe has spent the last two seasons in the prestigious Shattuck St. Mary’s program, developing in Minnesota. He recorded 36 points (6 goals, 30 assists) in 61 games for the Shattuck St. Mary’s 15U AAA during the 2024-25 season, but it’s his size that makes him incredibly intriguing (6-foot-7, 185lbs).
Meet The 5 OHL Players Who Will Represent USA At The 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup
Earlier, Hockey Canada announced their roster for the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, which included 11 OHL players. Their biggest and longest-standing rivals in hockey, the United States, responded by announcing their 23-man roster for the upcoming U18 tournament.
The new Michigan Wolverine commit is a bit of a unicorn given his size at such a young age, but also because he’s a surprisingly fluid skater, and his feet don’t lag him behind his age group. He’s an agile skater who uses his edges well to swiftly evade pressure.
Roscoe is one of three members from Shattuck’s 15U squad who have committed to playing in the OHL next season — top scorer Gerry DiCunzolo and goaltender Hagan Bach being the others.
PuckPreps has the Spirit defenseman listed as their fifth-ranked defender in the entire 2009-born American class, while Neutral Zone has him as the 59th-ranked North American 2009 prospect.
OHL Central Scouting scouting report on Roscoe reads:
“Drew has really turned a lot of heads, as it’s hard to find a defenseman that has his size and moves as well as he does. He is hard to beat one-on-one, as he uses his long reach and good stick to break up plays, intercept, and knock down passes. He moves the puck very well in all three zones and isn’t shy about jumping up into the play. He is a very smart and heady player who doesn’t force the play and makes the simple, effective plays.”
Canada's 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup Roster Finalized; 11 OHL Players Set To Represent Their Country Overseas
Hockey Canada has announced its 25-man roster for the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. The tournament will take place in Brno, Czechia, where Group A matches will be held, and in Trencin, Slovakia, for Group B matches. Canada will kick off its tournament on Aug. 11 against Finland.
Oliver McKinney, another top-ranked 2009-born prospect and Guelph Storm draft pick, recently announced his commitment to the University of Michigan as well. McKinney played with Roscoe on the Chicago Jr. Blackhawks at the 2019 Brick Invitational. Saginaw first-rounder Ryan Hanrahan was also at that event, suiting up for Team Quebec.
