Another standout overage player from the OHL has officially committed to an NCAA school, bringing the total to four active players making this significant leap.
Windsor Spitfires' 2004-born center Noah Morneau announced his commitment to Bowling Green State University for next season.
The Windsor, Ontario native can be a great motivator for young players who have been drafted in the late rounds of the OHL draft or have gone undrafted.
Morneau was picked 294th overall in the final round of the 2020 OHL Priority Selection. He was the seventh-last player selected in the draft, one spot before Chase Lefebvre, who recently was traded from Peterborough to Brampton.
He missed a full season in 2020-21 due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021-22, he played in the GOJHL for Windsor's Jr. B affiliate, LaSalle Vipers, and was a star for them, recording 45 points in 39 games.
The six-foot forward has spent the last two years playing a full-time role with the Spitfires, scoring 20 goals and 59 points in 131 games, showing that you don't have to be a high draft pick to go on and have a successful major junior hockey career.
Morneau has had a strong start to his third OHL season with eight goals and 24 points in 24 games, which is good for third-most points on Windsor.
In that 2020 OHL draft, Kingston Frontenacs forward Cedrick Guindon was selected 10th overall by the Owen Sound Attack, while Kitchener Rangers goaltender Jackson Parsons was picked 53rd overall. Both players have announced their commitments to play in the NCAA next season (Guindon to Vermont and Parsons to Clarkson).
Who will be the next player from the OHL to announce their commitment to play in the NCAA?
Notable candidates, based on their performance this season, include Greyhounds' goaltender Charlie Schenkel, Erie's Pano Fimis, North Bay captain Owen Van Steensel, and Kitchener leading scorer Adrian Misaljevic.
