This summer, Spencer Lazary and I will continue our series with more potential free agent targets that could be on the market on July 1st.
Today, we talk about 9-year vet Sean Kuraly.
Target: Sean Kuraly - C - Age: 32 - 9 Years Experience
Stats
Kuraly played all 82 games for the Jackets this past season. He scored 6 goals and 17 points, while getting a career low 11:46 of ice time. The majority of his time was spent killing penalties for Dean Evason's CBJ. He's averaging 22 points per 82 games played.
The important thing to remember about the season Kuraly just had is that he wasn't asked to do anything but kill penalties, and be a game disrupter. He was asked to go out there and give it everything he had during the time he was given, and he did just that. Sean Kuraly was very noticeable almost every single shift he took.
Previous Salary
Kuraly signed a 4 year, $10,000,000 contract with a cap hit of $2,500,000 per season in 2021 by former GM Jarmo Kekäläinen. Should the Jackets re-sign him, expect to see something around the same number he is now, with less term.
Realistic Chances Of A Signing - Warm-ish
You could see why Sean Kuraly would want to return to his hometown team. But is that in the cards for him? During exit interviews, he did a lot of reflecting on his four years in Columbus. Talking about the building, the fans, the experiences and everything else that went with it. He sure sounded like a player knowing he had played his last game in Columbus.
Should Don Waddell bring him back? He's a valuable leader on a team that needs veterans around the kids. His contract would be cheap and you know exactly what you're getting with him too.
I wouldn't count out Kuraly re-upping with Columbus just yet.
