The Carolina Hurricanes will kick off their 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs with Game 1 against the New Jersey Devils (42-33-7).
It's the seventh consecutive playoff appearance for the Canes, all coming under head coach Rod Brind'Amour, and the first for the Devils since 2023.
Neither team is entering the postseason hot, but there was also no real incentive for either squad down the stretch as theirs was the first playoff matchup to be locked in.
The Hurricanes went 3-6-1 in their last 10 games, going 1-4-0 in their last five and the Devils went 5-5-0, going 1-4-0 in their last five as well.
While the Canes are entering the playoffs with essentially a fully healthy lineup, the Devils are missing some big pieces, most notably Jack Hughes who is out for the season due to a shoulder injury.
Defenseman Jonas Siegnethaler is also currently out and while he is getting closer to a return, a round-one appearance doesn't seem likely.
The Devils have perhaps the best special teams combination in the league with the third ranked power play and second ranked kill so the Hurricanes will need to be extra aware of staying out of the box even with their top ranked penalty kill.
But if the Canes can find traction on the power play early and Frederik Andersen can outduel Jacob Markstrom, their superior depth should take over and push the Hurricanes to the top.
But the game is played on the ice not on paper, so we'll just have to see how it all shakes out.

- It will be the first playoff series against Carolina for both Noesen and Pesce, while Hamilton has gone up against the Canes once (0-1) and Haula has gone up against Carolina three times (0-3).
- On the flip side, the lone New Jersey connection on the Canes roster is Taylor Hall, who won the Hart Trophy with the Devils in 2018.
- The two teams have faced each other in five other postseason series. Carolina holds a 4-1 edge in those, having won each of the last four, including a 4-1 series win in the 2023 second-round.
