The Carolina Hurricanes will 'more than likely' be turning to veteran netminder Frederik Andersen once again for the first game of the playoffs as they take on the New Jersey Devils.
Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour was a bit hesitant at first to name his starting goalie for tomorrow, but eventually decided to reveal his hand.
"Yeah, I think so," Brind'Amour said when asked if he had decided on a a Game 1 starter. "I mean, I know that's the million dollar question... We'll more than likely start Freddie."
Andersen, 35, again had the majority of his regular season robbed due to injuries — this year it was a knee surgery in November that kept him out for three months — but since returning to action, he's been the Canes' most consistent goaltender.
In 22 games, Andersen had a 13-8-1 record with a 0.899 save percentage and one shutout.
While those numbers may seem pedestrian, you also have to account for the fact that the team had begun to rest players and let off the gas after clinching a playoff berth.
Before they clinched though, the Danish netminder was actually 10-4-0 since returning from injury with a 0.914 save percentage.
The ultimate question for the Canes though, will be if they continue to rotate netminders throughout the postseason.
When Andersen was healthy, he had a strict rotation with Pyotr Kochetkov that saw neither netminder play two games in a row.
But we've also never really ever seen a true rotation by any team come playoff time.
So it's going to be an interesting situation to keep track of because of Andersen's age and injury history.
"That is going to be... [goaltender coach Paul Schonfelder] and I will chat about it after tomorrow," Brind'Amour said when asked about keeping the rotation going. "We don't have it set in stone. We liked how we did it just because I think it keeps guys fresh, but at this time of the year, is that the right move? We'll definitely... like I said, everything's up in the air on that."
