Mikhail Yegorov saved 69 of 71 shots to lead Boston University to its record 32nd Beanpot title.
Aside from the NCAA Tournament, there is probably no bigger stage in men’s college hockey than the Men’s Beanpot Tournament.
For Boston University freshman and former Omaha Lancers goaltender Mikhail Yegorov, no stage appears too big. His dazzling performance in the tournament helped the No. 9 Terriers take down top-ranked Boston College 4-1 in the title game.
The victory marked a record 32nd Beanpot Championship for BU, and it was the freshmen who came through in the title game.
Brandon Svoboda (Fargo Force), Cole Hutson, and Cole Eiserman (NTDP U18 Team), each scored a goal in the championship game. Hutson was named the Steve Nazro Most Valuable Player Award winner.
Yegorov, however, stole the show with 43 saves in the win and stopped 69 of 71 shots for the tournament, despite only being with the club since the start of the second semester. He picked up the Eberle Award, given to the goalie with the highest save percentage (.971).
The Terriers came out a bit sluggish in the first period and trailed 1-0 at intermission
BU tested Yegorov early, getting off 16 of the game’s first 18 shots. The native of St. Petersburg, Russia withstood the onslaught, giving up just one goal in the first 20 minutes. It would be the only one he would allow.
“If you watched the first 15 minutes of the game, we were under siege,” BU head coach Jay Pandolfo said at his post-game presser. “For that reason, it took us a while to find our legs. This big fella right here (Yegorov) held us in the game.”
BU was able to overtake their arch-rival from the second period on with four unanswered goals. Svoboda and Hutson scored 70 seconds apart to put the Terriers in front to stay at 2-1.
Eiserman added a big insurance goal to make the score 3-1 with 6:08 remaining in regulation, and sophomore Gavin McCarthy added a 185-foot empty-net tally with 1:42 to play, preserving BU’s first Beanpot title since 2022.
“My confidence comes from my team and they helped me a lot, especially in the second when they scored and we started going,” Yegorov told reporters after the game.
The last several weeks have certainly been a whirlwind for Yegorov, who had been taking classes back in Omaha before arriving at BU. The 6-foot-5, 180-pound netminder played 62 games for the Lancers from 2023-25.
In 19 appearances with the club this season, Yegorov posted a 3.12 goals-against average and .912 save percentage. On Dec. 31, 2024, he set a single-game Lancers record with 66 saves.
In 43 games with Omaha during the 2023-24 season, Yegorov made a total of 1,126 saves with a 3.86 GAA and .892 SP.
Yegorov was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the second round (49th overall) of the 2024 NHL Draft. He was the second goaltender taken.
Now, just after his collegiate career has started, Yegorov already has a Beanpot title. His .971 save percentage was the third-highest in tournament history, behind former Terriers John Curry (.985, 2007) and Rick DiPietro (.981, 2000). In five starts with BU, he’s allowed only two 5-on-5 goals.
“He’s unreal,” Hutson said of Yegorov following the championship. “He’s been the backbone of our team since he got here. He’s going to keep battling for us the rest of the year, and we’re gonna need him.”
