Devils' Goaltending Prospect Shines In Beanpot Championship

Goaltender Mikhail Yegorov makes a name for himself month after the New Jersey Devils selected him in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft.

    Nico Hischier Injury Update

On June 29th, at the 2024 NHL Draft, the New Jersey Devils traded defenseman John Marino to the Utah Hockey Club.

Part of the return was a second-round pick in that year's draft, and with that 49th overall pick, general manager Tom Fitzgerald and his team selected a goaltender.

"How many goalies do we need?"

"We just got a goaltender. We have enough!"

    "We have six goaltenders. Six!"

The news was immediately met with displeasure, as some Devils fans took to social media to call the trade an "L" for New Jersey.

The goaltender in question was 18-year-old Mikhail Yegorov from St. Petersburg, Russia.

Yegorov was number one in Central Scouting's final ranking of North American goalies, with Al Jensen of Central Scouting sharing the report below.

"He has a huge pro presence and has shown steady development throughout the season," he said. "He moves well throughout the crease and has very good structure in his game. He is very tough to beat down low and in tight situations and has a chance and the ability to become a very good pro with more development. He is a high-end goalie prospect."

Just months after New Jersey selected him, the 6-foot-5 Russian netminder is beginning to garner attention and make a name for himself.

On Monday, he held Boston College to one goal, leading his team, Boston University, to a 4-1 victory in the 2025 Beanpot Championship. The goaltender was named Beanpot MVP, recording 43 saves on 44 shots.

Boston University Terriers' head coach, Jay Pandolfo, was drafted by the Devils 32nd overall in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft and has been nothing short of complimentary of Yegorov.

"He does not get caught up in the moment. He enjoys the moment. He thrives in the moment. And that is what he's done for us here," Pandolfo said of Yegorov to Boston.com. [...] I can't say enough great things about him. He has been awesome for us in a very short time."

The freshman transferred to Boston University in the second semester after playing 62 games from 2023-25 for the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL).

He has appeared in five games for the Terriers and has a 1.41 goals-against average and .951 save percentage.

Yegorov joins Nico Daws (24), Isaac Poulter (23), Jakub Malek (22), Tyler Brennan (21), and Veeti Louhivaara (19) as the young goaltenders in New Jersey's pipeline.
