On Thursday, the Waterloo Black Hawks announced they have completed a deal with the Sioux City Musketeers.
Waterloo added some bulk to its blueline with the addition of defenseman Easton Hewson in exchange for Landon Nycz.
The 6-foot-4, 221-pound Minnesota State commit is already one of the USHL’s most imposing defenders in his first season.
A native of Edmonton, the 19-year-old Hewson also has two prior years of experience with the Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
During his time with the Canucks, Hewson helped the club to an AJHL post-season title and appeared in the Centennial Cup semifinal as the Canucks bid for Canada’s Junior A Championship. He scored 11 points (2-9-11) in 15 league playoff games and added another assist in six Centennial Cup contests.
The left-shot defenseman was Calgary’s highest-scoring blueliner during the 2023-24 season, ranking fifth overall on the team with 29 points (6-23-29) in 54 games.
In 29 games with Sioux City, Hewson recorded three goals and four assists for seven points. He scored his first goal on Oct. 11, 2024 against USA’s National Team Development Program. His most recent tally came in a 3-0 road shutout against the Fargo Force on Jan. 17.
Last spring, NHL Central Scouting ranked Hewson 183rd among North American prospects eligible for the 2024 NHL Draft. Although he was not chosen by an NHL club, Sioux City selected him with a first-round Phase II pick (12th overall) during the 2024 USHL Draft.
Hewson now joins Black Hawk captain Reid Morich as the second current Waterloo player committed to Minnesota State.
The 17-year-old Nycz skated two seasons in Waterloo. Over 86 games, the defenseman tallied 31 points (6-25-31).
The Black Hawks travel to Sioux Falls for a matchup with the Stampede Thursday before returning home on Friday for a showdown with the Des Moines Buccaneers.
Friday’s game just so happens to fall on National Hot Chocolate Day, so all fans in attendance will receive a voucher for free hot chocolate, redeemable at any Kwik Star location.
