Forward Bobby Cowan joins the Madison Capitols after scoring 45 points in 30 games for Edina High School and six points in 20 games for the Omaha Lancers last year

The Madison Capitols have acquired forward Bobby Cowan from the Omaha Lancers in a 1-for-1 deal in exchange for defenseman Nathan Tobey.

This marks Madison's third trade of the summer after previously acquiring goaltenders Ajay White and Caleb Heil in separate deals. For Omaha, this is their first trade acquisition of the offseason.

    Capitols Acquire Cowan

Bobby Cowan split last season between Omaha and Edina (Minnesota) High School. With the latter, the 18-year-old tallied 24 goals and 21 assists in 30 games, making his 45 points the second-most on Edina's roster. Added, Cowan bested the previous year's point total by seven in just as many games played.

In the USHL, the University of St. Thomas commit recorded six points on one goal and five assists and scored his lone marker in Omaha's penultimate game, a 5-3 win against Tri-City, of the season.

With the loss of key forwards Austin Burnevik, James Hong, and Max Nagel, among others, the Capitols hope that a full season of Cowan's scoring abilities will help recoup some of the production that graduated to the NCAA.

The 5-foot-10, 181-pound forward was originally selected in the fourth round, 49th overall, by the Lancers in the 2023 USHL Phase II Draft.

    Lancers Acquire Tobey

Defenseman Nathan Tobey recorded nine points (all assists) and skated in 59 games after being drafted by Madison in the first round, 14th overall, in the 2023 USHL Phase II Draft.

Prior to joining the Caps, Tobey spent two years at the U.S. National Team Development Program in Plymouth, Michigan. There, the 6-foot-tall, 170-pound blueliner had 11 points (all assists) in 106 games. Should he find the back of the net in Omaha this season, it will mark his first career USHL goal.

Tobey will skate with the Lancers in the upcoming 2024-25 season before heading off to Quinnipiac in Fall 2025.

    Long Time, No See

Neither player will have to waste any time in facing their former teams. Madison and Omaha open their seasons against one another on Thursday, September 19 at the 2024 USHL Fall Classic.

We previously highlighted this matchup as one to watch. Now, there an added reason to tune in with Tobey and Cowan skating against their old teams.
