Caleb Heil will have an opportunity to be the No. 1 goaltender in Madison next year.
The Madison Capitols made a move in advance of Tuesday's USHL Phase II Draft, acquiring goaltender Caleb Heil from the Sioux Falls Stampede.
In addition to Heil, the Capitols are receiving a ninth-round pick in the 2025 USHL Phase I Draft. In exchange, Sioux Falls is getting a second-round pick in Tuesday's Phase II Draft, a third-round pick in the 2025 USHL Phase I Draft, and future considerations.
Heil, ranked as the No. 23 North American goaltender in Central Scouting's final rankings, accumulated a 6-10-1-0 record with a 4.32 goals-against average and 0.850 save percentage in 19 appearances for the Herd during the 2023–24 season.
The North Dakota commit spent much of the 2023–24 season in a secondary role for Sioux Falls, while Michael Chambre took the lion's share of the starts between the pipes.
After the Stampede acquired Christian Manz from the Chicago Steel before the trade deadline, Heil got a four-game look with the NTDP U18 team, where he posted a 3.90 goals-against average and 0.897 save percentage.
In addition to his USHL play, Heil represented Team USA at the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup last August, where he guided the Americans to a bronze-medal finish.
The young goaltender also took part in the World Junior A Challenge in December, allowing two goals and turning aside 29 of 31 in Team USA's 7-2 win over Canada East.
Heil also saw over 13 minutes between the pipes in Team USA's blowout win against Latvia in the U18 Men's World Championship.
With Carsen Musser and Patriks Berzins expected to move on, Heil will have an opportunity to be the No. 1 goaltender in Madison next season.
