Harper Frey sits down to discuss his season, the upcoming USHL playoffs and his commitment to the University of Wisconsin for the 2027-28 season

With 17 games remaining, the Madison Capitols find themselves in fifth place in the crowded United States Hockey League’s Eastern Conference playoff picture. Currently holding a five-point cushion inside the playoff picture, the Capitols are looking to finish the season strong.

Currently in his first full season with the Capitols, defenseman Harper Frey is focused on getting the Capitols into the playoffs and getting on a run with the eyes set on the franchise’s first Clark Cup.

“We just need to be really detail-oriented to help lead us into the playoffs and have our game where it needs to be,” Frey said. “If we do that come playoff time, we will be ready to go.”

The Capitols have found themselves in a hot streak as of late, going 7-3-0 in their past 10 games. The seven wins are the most of any team in the Eastern Conference in their respective 10-game stretch.

“Everyone has been buying in as we get near the end of the season,” Frey said. “In a 62-game season, you’re going to need everyone. The depth is a big strength of our team, we need everyone.”

Through 35 games played this season, Frey has recorded 11 assists and a plus-minus rating of plus-nine. After playing with the Capitols for two games in the 2023-24 season and six games in 2024-25 season, Frey has continued to become more comfortable playing at the USHL level over the three years.

“I’ve just become an overall more mature player, and my skill set has improved,” Frey said. “I’ve worked on my skating, passing and just spent a lot of time in the gym to help get stronger and better.”

A Madison, Wisconsin native, Frey grew up playing through the Madison Capitols AAA system before making the jump to play with the USHL Capitols.

“It’s super cool to play for the Capitols, especially being from Wisconsin,” Frey said. “I’m fortunate to play from my hometown and continue to get the opportunity to play in front of my family and friends.”

In November, Frey announced his commitment to the University of Wisconsin for the 2027-28 season, planning to remain in his home state as his hockey career progresses to higher levels.

“Growing up in Madison, that was always the goal for me. Being able to get this opportunity is something that is really special to me. They have a great school and campus, so I’m really looking forward to making the most out of it,” Frey said. “I was always a fan of the Badgers growing up, so I’m very grateful for the opportunity up ahead. When I make the jump to college, I’ll be ready.”

As the playoff chase heats up in the USHL, Frey remains focused on the goal at hand this year. Frey wants to be at his best when the games mean the most.

“We are going to really prepare ourselves as a team to go into the playoffs in a good spot and go on a run,” Frey said. “I want to keep sharpening my game and provide a little more offense down the stretch here.”

The Capitols are back in action on Friday, Feb. 20, when they host the Des Moines Buccaneers. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. CST.
