The U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team defeated Switzerland, 4-0, in the quarterfinal round of the 2024 IIHF U18 Men's World Championship on Thursday.
Team USA went scoreless in a penalty-filled first period for the first time in the tournament as the Americans looked a little disjointed in five-on-five play. However, USA exploded for three goals in the second period before adding another midway through the final frame.
After going a perfect 4 for 4 on the power play against Finland, Team USA went 0 for 6 against Switzerland but killed off all six penalties as well.
Team USA advances to the semifinal round on Saturday, May 4.
Here is a look at the top five performers from Team USA.
#10, James Hagens, F (2025)
Hagens continued his tournament for the ages and sits just two points back of Nikita Kucherov's all-time tournament scoring record. The 17-year-old opened the scoring for the Americans and collected the primary assist on a beautiful 2-on-1 rush with Brodie Ziemer. Hagens added his second goal and third point of the game in the third period.
#2, Brodie Ziemer, F (2024)
Ziemer was effective in all three zones on Thursday and assisted on Hagens' goal in the second period after forcing a turnover in the neutral zone. The University of Minnesota commit potted his second goal of the tournament in that three-goal second period on a 2-on-1 rush with Hagens.
#6, EJ Emery, D (2024)
Emery has primarily been a standout in this tournament for his defensive play thus far, but the North Dakota commit jumped into the rush a couple of times on Thursday. In the second period, Emery's shot on goal created some chaos in front of the Swiss net, leading to Christian Humphrey's goal.
#31, Nick Kempf, G (2024)
Kempf was certainly tested more than he has been in this tournament so far, especially in the first period when Team USA looked a little disjointed in 5-on-5 play. The Notre Dame commit had a big save on a Swiss partial breakaway late in the second period to keep a clean sheet. With 17 saves, Kempf was named USA's Player of the Game.
#34, Cole Eiserman, F (2024)
Eiserman was unable to find the back of the net for the second consecutive game and still remains two goals back of Cole Caufield's NTDP scoring record. However, the Boston University commit was a significant play-driver, consistently taking the puck to the net. Eiserman led Team USA with seven shots on goal.
