WHL Eastern Conference Title Comes Down To Final Day

Jenn Pierce // Calgary HitmenJenn Pierce // Calgary Hitmen

In a battle that fans may or may hot have seen coming from a mile away, the WHL Eastern conference lead has made its way to the final day of the regular season; not only that, the two teams competing for it are facing off against each other.

Similar to the battle between the Saskatoon Blades and Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday, the Calgary Hitmen and Medicine Hat Tigers will face off on Sunday afternoon to determine who will walk away as not only the Central division champion, but also the Eastern conference champion.

Medicine Hat are winners of nine in a row, and 13 of their last 14 games. Gavin McKenna has gone nuclear, just four points shy of 130 on the season. What's even crazier, is that he is also three points shy of 100 over his 39- (potentially 40-) game point streak. With 20 points in his last four (!) games, the young superstar is on a mission.

Heading up the highway to Calgary, the dynamic duo of Ben Kindel and Oliver Tulk has cooled off offensively, but it has been the Daniel Hauser show as of late. Snapping the league all-time wins record, as well as the team all-time shutout record, the Hitmen goaltending has gotten white-hot at the right time. The last time Calgary allowed more than two goals in a game? February 15th against the Swift Current Broncos; who, should the Hitmen win this game, will be facing off against in round one of the postseason.
