Previewing the 2024-25 Splane Chiefs' season.

Welcome to The Hockey News 2024-25 season preview series. From August 29 to September 20, THN's WHL duo will examine some of the biggest storylines facing each team this season. Today's edition is focused on the Spokane Chiefs, who look ready to take another step forward this year.
2023-24 Statistics:
Regular Season Record: 30-32-5-1, 66 Points (4th U.S. Division)
Playoffs: Defeated By Prince George Cougars 4-0
Key Departures: Chase Bertholet (F), Conner Roulette (F), Ty Cheveldayoff (F)
Key Additions: Carter Esler (G), Cohen Harris (F)
Although the Chiefs will once again have a young team, their roster has some of the most exciting talent in the WHL. They have a talented group of forwards and defencemen, while their goaltending room is one of the strongest in the U.S. Division. Ultimately, they should finish above eighth place in the West and may even be in contention for home ice come playoff time.
Just like last season, Berkly Catton is expected to lead the charge offensively. The Seattle Kraken's first-round pick is coming off a 116-point campaign and should be in the conversation for U.S. Division MVP by the end of the year. Add in talented prospects like Mathis Preston, Chase Harrington, as well as Brody Gillespie, and you have one of the most talented forward groups in the West.
As for the defence, this is a group with plenty of experience at the WHL level. Nathan Mayes, William McIsaac and Saige Weinstein are all associated with NHL teams, while defenders like Rhett Sather and Kaden Allan are ready to take the next step in their development. Overall, this defensive group should make life difficult for the opposition while being able to limit the high-danger chances their goaltenders face.
Lastly, goaltending shouldn't be an issue for Spokane this season. They have a solid duo of Dawson Cowan and Cooper Michaluk, while Carter Esler looks like their goaltender of the future. All three of these goaltenders can steal games, which will be crucial in securing a top-four spot in the conference.
While Spokane did lose some key pieces this offseason, they are a deep team that should have no problem scoring goals. Depending on how the first half of their season goes, they may even be a buyer come trade deadline. In short, don't sleep on the Chiefs, as they could be the surprise of the 2024-25 season.
