Welcome to this edition of the 2025 WHL Prospect Pools. Throughout the 2025 off-season, we will be taking a look at current or recently graduated WHLers who have either been drafted or signed by NHL clubs. Today's organization is the Dallas Stars, which has three WHLers in its prospect pool.
At the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, the Stars used their first two picks to select players from the WHL. Vancouver Giants' Cameron Schmidt was drafted in the third round while Calgary Hitmen's Brandon Gorzynski went in the fourth round. They joined Medicine Hat Tigers' Niilopekka Muhonen, who was a fifth-round pick in 2024.
Starting with Schmidt, he has developed into one of the best goal scorers in the WHL. The 18-year-old winger scored 40 times during the 2024-25 season while recording 78 points in 61 games. Listed at 5'8", 161 lbs, Schmidt also won Gold for Canada at the 2025 U18 Hockey Championship.
Next up is Gorzynski, who had an impressive second season with Calgary. The 18-year-old winger had a significant point increase, going from nine points in 42 games in 2023-24 to 42 points in 68 games last season. Listed at 6'2", 185 lbs, Gorzynski was able to make a significant impact during the 2025 playoffs, recording eight points in 11 games.
As for Muhonen, he had a rookie campaign to remember. The Finnish defenceman recorded 17 points in 60 games and helped the Tigers qualify for the Memorial Cup. Listed at 6'5", 214 lbs, Mihonen is projected to return to the WHL next season.
